Who we are
Hollywood Billiards is named in honor of Raymond “Hollywood” Merling, a man who spent most of his life around a pool table and the people who gathered there. Ray grew up in Baltimore and never really put a cue down after that. Friends started calling him “Hollywood” because of his signature sunglasses and the way he carried himself – confident, a little flashy, but always friendly. He could talk with anyone, and he treated the pool hall like a second home. Over the years he walked what felt like miles around the table, playing 8‑ball, swapping stories, and giving pointers to anyone who wanted to learn. He wasn’t just interested in winning games. He cared about the people standing on the other side of the table – the regulars, the new faces, and the kids trying to figure out the game and maybe a little bit of life too.
George Merling chose the name “Hollywood Billiards” to keep that spirit alive. This place is a small tribute to Ray: a spot where working people from Cumberland, LaVale, and the surrounding area can relax after a long day, shoot a few racks, and feel like they belong.
When you walk in, the name on the sign is Hollywood’s, but the room is for everyone who loves the sound of balls breaking, a good laugh, and a place that feels like home for a couple of hours.
